India climbs six places to 61st rank in network readiness index

India has made significant progress in the Network Readiness Index 2022, climbing six places to secure the 61st rank, according to a statement from the telecom ministry on Saturday. The country’s overall score has risen from 49.74 in 2021 to 51.19 in 2022, marking an improvement.

As per the recently released Network Readiness Index 2022 (NRI 2022) report by the US-based non-profit organization Portulans Institute, India excelled in various categories. The report highlighted India’s first rank in ‘AI talent concentration,’ second rank in ‘Mobile broadband internet traffic within the country’ and ‘International Internet bandwidth,’ and third rank in ‘Annual investment in telecommunication services’ and ‘Domestic market size.’ Additionally, India secured the fourth rank in ‘ICT Services exports,’ fifth rank in ‘FTTH/Building Internet subscriptions,’ and ‘AI scientific publications.’

The United States claimed the top spot on the list with an overall score of 80.3, followed by Singapore with a score of 79.35 and Sweden with a score of 78.91.

In the Asia Pacific region, Singapore led the way, followed by South Korea and Japan. The statement highlighted that the NRI-2022 report emphasized India’s network readiness surpassing expectations given its income level. Among lower-middle-income countries, India ranked third out of 36, following Ukraine (50) and Indonesia (59). India’s score exceeded the income group average across all pillars and sub-pillars, according to the report.
